Pumped for Power: Pumped storage in the clean energy transition

Location/room:
Date:
Tuesday, September 9, 2025
Time:
17:00 - 18:00 CET

Overview

Electricity systems are undergoing a significant transition to dependence on variable renewable energy, whether that is driven by economic, energy security or climate concerns. The flipside of that coin is the need for complementary “clean, firm” power sources, of which pumped storage can be a key part. This session will feature senior figures from governments, generators, TSOs and analysts discussing the position of pumped storage in this new world. Key issues to be discussed include:

  • Assessing how much LDES do we need. When to use pumped storage and when to use alternative storage solutions?
  • The role of global storage targets.
  • The policy tools to enable investment in pumped storage.
  • Enabling the roll-out of other renewables.
  • Capitalising on the benefits of localised supply chains.
