The renaissance of pumped storage in Europe: Building on new European policies

The European power sector and electricity market is undergoing one of the most disruptive evolutions in its history. From one side, Europe’s challenging energy transition targets, including the EU’s aim to achieve 42.5% of renewable energy by 2030 and the UK’s clean power objective for the same date, are quickly and radically changing the composition of the power fleet. At the same time, they pose technical challenges to the way our power systems are operated. The goal of this session will be to review the impact of these reforms, discuss how the power sector is changing and the important role that pumped storage will play in supporting Europe’s future energy security.
