In November 2020 the International Hydropower Association (IHA) and the U.S. Department of Energy launched the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower. The year-long initiative developed guidance and recommendations across three distinct areas on sustainable pumped storage’s support to the energy transition: Policy and Markets, Sustainability, and Capabilities, Costs and Innovation. The Forum brought together 13 governments (including China, India, the US and many European), industry, financial institutions, academia and NGOs to share their experiences and build best practice.
The 2021 Forum not only generated invaluable recommendations but also sparked a surge in global interest and investment in pumped storage. Participating governments—including Australia, India, several European countries, and the United States—have since implemented policies that include or target pumped storage, driving energy storage and flexibility to the forefront of renewable energy strategies.
