Energy system planning to incentivise pumped storage: Filling the hole left by coal

Location/room:
Date:
Tuesday, September 9, 2025
Time:
14:30 - 15:25 CET

Overview

The pathway to a decarbonised economy relies heavily on a dramatic shift in the composition of the world’s electricity generating fleet. Solar and wind power’s contributions will grow to 70%, while coal, oil and gas capacity will need to reduce at a rate of 100 GW per year. This session will explore the critical role of pumped storage in enabling the energy transition and how it supports keeping the lights on. It will cover the tools that the energy market must adopt to support the necessary LDES developments.
