Getting pumped storage built in North America: Building energy security and grid reliability

Location/room:
Date:
Tuesday, September 9, 2025
Time:
11.00 - 11.55 CET

Overview

Hydropower is a well-known, mature technology in North America. However, despite the emerging need for flexibility, there has been limited growth in pumped storage over the past three decades. There is clearly developer appetite with close to 90 GW of projects in their early stages. Pumped storage is a key element of a secure and resilient grid, playing well to the needs of the region. This session will look at the barriers to developing the project pipeline, what the market environment looks like for investment in assets and case studies in how industry is tackling the challenges.
