Innovating for grid flexibility: The new technology showcase

Location/room:
Date:
Wednesday, September 10, 2025
Time:
10:45 - 11:40 CET

Overview

The pathway to a net zero economy is posing unprecedented challenges to electric power systems; in a world dominated by non-dispatchable sources, system flexibility will be a crucial aspect that will need to be maximised and valued. This session will explore the technical innovations that support / enable grid flexibility, hearing from owners/operators, equipment manufacturers and energy experts who have studied and implemented full-scale flexibility for PSH plants. From variable speed to battery-turbine hybridisation, hydraulic short circuit and plant digitalisation, this session will explore the risks and rewards associated with these technologies, and the lessons that can be drawn for Europe and the rest of the world.

Session objectives

The pathway to a net zero economy is posing unprecedented challenges to electric power systems; in a world dominated by non-dispatchable sources, system flexibility will be a crucial factor. This session will explore the technical innovations that support and enable grid flexibility, hearing from owners/operators, equipment manufacturers and energy experts who have studied and implemented full-scale flexibility for pumped storage projects. From variable speed to battery-turbine hybridisation, hydraulic short circuit and plant digitalisation, this session will explore the risks and rewards associated with these technologies, and the lessons that can be drawn for Europe and the rest of the world.
