Modernising old facilities and optimising existing infrastructure

Achieving an efficient and reliable energy system cost effectively requires making the most of existing infrastructure. This will include older pumped storage facilities from earlier waves of development that need modernisation and extension to maximise their flexibility. There is also the option of converting existing hydropower sites into open-loop pumped storage through the addition of pumps. The challenges and opportunities of enhancing existing assets will be addressed in this session, exploring how this low-cost investment option can be optimised.
